MITOSIS
Mitosis is a play on words; it’s regeneration through myth.
Photographic creation can serve as a means of research and self-knowledge. It can serve as a catharsis, an extension of our belief systems and emotions, and a means to understand, interpret, represent, communicate, and reflect on reality.
During the confinement caused by the global pandemic, I watched many films, listened to music, and read extensively. But I missed the human connection. Even when we were finally able to go outside, we still couldn’t connect, touch, or hug. So, I went on walks with my new friends.
The legends and myths of cinema and music live on through me and, as an extension of myself, through my daughter. These characters stay ever-present in the collective memory, constantly rewritten but never surpassed. Their legacy remains imperishable through me, at least for this moment.
Through the process of mitosis, I split into different personalities. I multiply to regenerate, cleanse, and relieve myself. Catharsis brings emotional, spiritual, mental, and physical purification. I release my own passions by seeing them projected onto the characters. And in doing so, I manage to achieve this, even if only for a moment. And I have fun.
During this period, the creation of images gave meaning to my life. The decision-making process involved location, framing, and character… Everything was still constrained by the situation, yet it allowed me to express myself visually in a way I hadn’t before.
