Water and air. These substances are so common that they hardly draw our attention, and yet, they guarantee our very existence. The origins of life are shrouded in myth: the presence of water and air. Living phenomena spontaneously generated from water and air in the presence of light—although that could easily suggest a random coincidence, like a Deity. Let’s just say there happened to be a planet with water and air in our solar system, and, moreover, precisely at the right distance from the sun with the temperatures needed to generate life.
While it’s not entirely inconceivable that at least one such planet exists in the vast reaches of the universe, we search in vain for another similar example. Mystery of mysteries, water and air are right there in front of us in the sea. Every time I see the sea, I feel a soothing sense of safety, as if visiting the home of my ancestors; I embark on a journey of looking.
