Someone we loved deeply. Even someone with whom we had a difficult relationship.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">We can close our eyes and remember their face, the way they looked at us, a particular gesture, a phrase they used to say, or the way they walked. But what we carry within us is not exactly that person\u2014it is a representation. An image shaped by memories, emotions, experiences, needs, desires, fears, and also by everything we may never have fully understood.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Psychology has a particularly beautiful word for some of these inner images: <strong>imago<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">In Latin, imago means \u201cimage\u201d, which may be why the concept feels especially evocative when we think about photography.<\/span><\/p><p>&nbsp;<\/p><p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-64641 size-large aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/andanafoto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Que-es-una-imago-foto-768x1024.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" srcset=\"https:\/\/andanafoto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Que-es-una-imago-foto-768x1024.webp 768w, https:\/\/andanafoto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Que-es-una-imago-foto-225x300.webp 225w, https:\/\/andanafoto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Que-es-una-imago-foto.webp 1125w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/p><p>&nbsp;<\/p><p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">The concept of imago is closely linked to Carl Gustav Jung\u2019s analytical psychology. An imago <strong>is the psychological representation, largely unconscious, that we build of someone who has played a significant role in our lives.<\/strong><\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>The imago is not the person; it is our inner representation of them.<\/strong><\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">There is my real mother, with her own story, her strengths, her struggles and her contradictions. And then there is <strong>the mother I carry within me<\/strong>. The two may resemble each other closely\u2014or they may not.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Our experience of another person is never shaped solely by what they did. It is also influenced by how we experienced those events, how old we were, what we needed, what we were able to understand at the time, and the emotions that became attached to those experiences. This is why two siblings can grow up with the same parents and yet develop very different psychological representations of them.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">We could express it like this:<\/span><\/p><p>&nbsp;<\/p><blockquote><p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>REAL PERSON \u2192 EXPERIENCES \u2192 EMOTIONS \u2192 INTERPRETATIONS \u2192 IMAGO<br \/><\/strong><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote><p>&nbsp;<\/p><p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">The person exists outside us; the imago emerges within us.<\/span><\/p><p>&nbsp;<\/p><p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-64642\" src=\"https:\/\/andanafoto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/la-imago-aparece-dentro.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"802\" srcset=\"https:\/\/andanafoto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/la-imago-aparece-dentro.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/andanafoto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/la-imago-aparece-dentro-300x201.jpg 300w, https:\/\/andanafoto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/la-imago-aparece-dentro-1024x684.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/andanafoto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/la-imago-aparece-dentro-768x513.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/p><p>&nbsp;<\/p><p class=\"PDq2pG_selectionAnchorContainer\" data-start=\"28\" data-end=\"188\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">The most significant <em data-start=\"49\" data-end=\"57\">imagos<\/em> are usually formed around our earliest emotional bonds: our mother, father, siblings, and other important people during childhood.<\/span><\/p><p data-start=\"190\" data-end=\"511\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Imagine a little girl whose mother is going through a difficult period in her life for several years and is often preoccupied. The child is unlikely to think, <em data-start=\"349\" data-end=\"443\">My mother is going through a difficult time, which is why she is less emotionally available.<\/em> Her experience is much simpler: <em data-start=\"476\" data-end=\"511\">When I need her, she isn\u2019t there.<\/em><\/span><\/p><p data-start=\"513\" data-end=\"747\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">When certain experiences are repeated, they can contribute to the formation of an inner representation of relationships and of the people in them. We do not retain the events themselves\u2014we retain <strong>the emotional meaning they had for us.<\/strong><\/span><\/p><p data-start=\"749\" data-end=\"858\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">These representations can continue to shape our lives many years later, even when circumstances have changed.<\/span><\/p><p data-start=\"860\" data-end=\"1063\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">This is precisely what Jung observed in many of his patients: mothers and fathers who had been absent for years\u2014or had even passed away\u2014continued to have a powerful presence in their psychological lives.<\/span><\/p><p data-start=\"1065\" data-end=\"1161\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Some behaviours were driven not by the real father, but by <strong>the internalised image of the father.<\/strong><\/span><\/p><p data-start=\"1163\" data-end=\"1261\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">This is why Jung considered it essential to distinguish between the real person and their <em data-start=\"1253\" data-end=\"1260\">imago<\/em>.<\/span><\/p><p>&nbsp;<\/p><blockquote><p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>We do not remember like a camera does<\/strong><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote><p>&nbsp;<\/p><p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Unfortunately, <strong>our memory does not work like a photographic archive.<\/strong><\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">When we remember, we do not retrieve an untouched copy of what happened. Memory is reconstructive. Every time we recall an experience, elements from the present come into play: our current understanding, our emotions, the stories we have built about ourselves, and everything that happened afterwards.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">This means that our imago is not an exact reproduction of a person either. <strong>It is a psychological construction.<\/strong><\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">It may contain real elements, but also interpretations, idealisations, disappointments, expectations, fantasies, and the meanings we have gradually attached to it over time.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">A person may have died twenty years ago, yet our psychological relationship with them can continue to evolve. The person no longer changes, but we do. And that personal growth can also transform the way we understand their story.<\/span><\/p><p>&nbsp;<\/p><p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-64643\" src=\"https:\/\/andanafoto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Imago-Album-familiar.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1400\" height=\"909\" srcset=\"https:\/\/andanafoto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Imago-Album-familiar.jpg 1400w, https:\/\/andanafoto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Imago-Album-familiar-300x195.jpg 300w, https:\/\/andanafoto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Imago-Album-familiar-1024x665.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/andanafoto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Imago-Album-familiar-768x499.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1400px) 100vw, 1400px\" \/><\/p><p>&nbsp;<\/p><p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Let us make an important distinction.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">A memory might be: My father used to take me to school every morning.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">An imago is something deeper and more complex. It is the psychological representation I have built of &#8220;my father&#8221; through hundreds or even thousands of experiences. Within it, protection, authority, fear, admiration, absence, tenderness, high expectations, security, and disappointment can all coexist.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">This is why an imago is not simply a mental photograph. <strong>It is an inner structure through which we feel, interpret and relate to that person<\/strong> in the present.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Here we find one of the most fascinating psychological implications of the concept: <strong>our imagos can influence the way we interpret other people.<\/strong><\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Imagine someone who, throughout childhood, repeatedly experienced that the people who mattered most were unavailable whenever they needed them.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Years later, they send a message to their partner. Several hours pass without a reply. The objective fact is simply: They haven&#8217;t replied yet. But internally, something much more intense may arise: I&#8217;m not important. I can&#8217;t trust anyone. Whenever I need someone, they disappear.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">The intensity of the emotion does not necessarily come only from what is happening in the present. The present can reactivate something from the past.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Different schools of psychology have used different concepts to explain a similar phenomenon: our earlier experiences help shape the way we interpret later ones. This brings us close to psychological concepts such as <strong>transference, projection, cognitive schemas, and internal working models of relationships.<\/strong><\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">We never enter a relationship as a blank slate. Our inner camera already holds images that resonate with what we experience. We arrive carrying our own history. <strong>We see others through the lens of ourselves.<\/strong><\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Without even realising it, we may expect someone to behave in the same way that another person did many years ago.<\/span><\/p><p>&nbsp;<\/p><blockquote><p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>What does all this have to do with photography?<\/strong><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote><p>&nbsp;<\/p><p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">A photograph is also an image of someone, but it is not that person. It is an image of a person, not the person themselves. It is a visual representation of them at a particular moment in time.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">And when we look at that photograph, we do not see only what it objectively contains. We see it through the lens of our own history, our memories, our relationship with that person, and our imago.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">A photograph can awaken an inner representation that has remained outside our conscious awareness for years. Perhaps this is why family photographs have such an extraordinary ability to spark conversations.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Looking at the same image, one person might say, &#8220;Mum looked so happy that summer.&#8221;<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">And their sibling might reply, &#8220;I remember perfectly well that she was angry that day.&#8221;<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">The photograph is the same. <strong>The personal history from which each person views it is not.<\/strong><\/span><\/p><p>&nbsp;<\/p><h3><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>Roland Barthes Searching for His Mother<\/strong><\/span><\/h3><p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">There is a wonderful story about photography that seems to speak directly to the concept of imago.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">After his mother&#8217;s death, Roland Barthes began searching for her among old photographs. He was not simply looking for a photograph in which her face appeared. He was searching for something far more elusive: <strong>he wanted to recognise her.<\/strong><\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">He found photographs that objectively showed his mother, yet he felt that the woman in them was not fully the mother he had known. Then he came across a photograph taken in 1898.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">His mother was about five years old and was pictured with her brother in a winter garden. In that little girl, Barthes recognised the mother he had known all his life. Of course, he did not recognise her physical appearance, but he found in that image something essential about who she was. Her kindness\u2014&#8221;the kindness which had formed her immediately and forever&#8221;\u2014seemed to radiate from the photograph.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">That photograph became the emotional centre of Camera Lucida. Yet Barthes chose <strong>not to publish it in the book<\/strong>, because he understood that, for the reader, it would simply be an old photograph of a little girl. In 2020, she created the project <em data-start=\"200\" data-end=\"267\">Keeper of the Hearth: Picturing Roland Barthes&#8217; Unseen Photograph<\/em>, inviting more than two hundred photographers, artists, writers, critics, curators and historians from around the world to respond\u2014with either an image or a text\u2014to the Winter Garden Photograph that Barthes had described but that none of them had ever seen. The project became a 320-page photobook as well as an exhibition at the Houston Center for Photography.<\/span><\/p><p data-start=\"631\" data-end=\"1526\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">The result is especially compelling when considered through the concept of <em data-start=\"706\" data-end=\"713\">imago<\/em>: <strong>more than two hundred people imagining an absent image through the lens of their own experiences, memories and relationships<\/strong>. England does not attempt to reconstruct what Barthes&#8217; photograph of his mother actually looked like. Instead, she transforms its absence into a space for creation and reflection. The project brings together found photographs, family images, portraits and responses that are strikingly different from one another. Every participant begins with the same invisible photograph, yet each creates something entirely unique. Perhaps this is because, when an image is no longer before our eyes, we inevitably begin searching for it within ourselves. Three related, yet distinct, realities.<\/span><\/p><p data-start=\"276\" data-end=\"420\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">A family photograph may show our father smiling. But what we remember may be the profound sense of protection, belonging or love we experienced.<\/span><\/p><p data-start=\"422\" data-end=\"484\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">The photograph records an appearance. <strong>We bring the experience.<\/strong><\/span><\/p><p data-start=\"486\" data-end=\"588\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Here lies one of the most fascinating possibilities of using photography as a tool for self-knowledge.<\/span><\/p><p data-start=\"590\" data-end=\"1078\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Exploring an <em data-start=\"603\" data-end=\"610\">imago<\/em> does not necessarily mean discovering whether our inner representation is &#8220;true&#8221; or &#8220;false&#8221;. Rather, it means recognising that <strong>we always look from a particular place<\/strong>\u2014that our way of seeing is shaped by the experiences we have lived, the emotions we have felt, and the meanings we have given them. Understanding where we are looking from can open the door to greater awareness and the freedom to choose whether to reinterpret, strengthen or let go of certain memories.<\/span><\/p><p>&nbsp;<\/p><blockquote><p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>Is There an Imago of Ourselves?<\/strong><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote><p>&nbsp;<\/p><p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">If we construct psychological images of the important people in our lives, we also construct representations of ourselves.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">At this point, it is important not to confuse the Jungian concept of imago with contemporary psychological concepts such as s<strong>elf-image, self-concept, narrative identity, or self-schemas.<\/strong><\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Yet the question that emerges is a fascinating one: <strong>Who is the person in the photograph? Can I recognise myself?<\/strong><\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">And this is where the self-portrait enters the picture.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">When someone stands in front of the camera, they are not simply photographing their body or their face. They may also encounter the distance between:<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>who I am,<\/strong><\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>who I believe I am,<\/strong><\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>who I used to be,<\/strong><\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>who others believe I am,<\/strong><\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>and who I am trying to become.<\/strong><\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Perhaps this is why some self-portraits feel so unfamiliar. We recognise ourselves physically, yet we think: That isn&#8217;t me. I don&#8217;t see myself.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Or the exact opposite happens. An imperfect, blurred or seemingly insignificant photograph immediately sparks a sense of recognition: That&#8217;s it. That&#8217;s me.<\/span><\/p><p>&nbsp;<\/p><blockquote><h2><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>An Image Is Never Just an Image<\/strong><\/span><\/h2><\/blockquote><p>&nbsp;<\/p><p class=\"PDq2pG_selectionAnchorContainer\" data-start=\"28\" data-end=\"152\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">The concept of <em data-start=\"43\" data-end=\"50\">imago<\/em> reminds us of something that is especially important to us at ANDANA: <strong>looking is never a neutral act.<\/strong><\/span><\/p><p data-start=\"154\" data-end=\"307\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Whenever we look at a photograph, we also look through the lens of our own life story, our relationships, our losses, and everything we long for or fear.<\/span><\/p><p data-start=\"309\" data-end=\"419\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Perhaps this is why some photographs hold immense meaning for us while meaning nothing at all to someone else.<\/span><\/p><p data-start=\"421\" data-end=\"482\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>The photograph exists outside us, but the image lives within.<\/strong><\/span><\/p><p data-start=\"484\" data-end=\"615\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">And perhaps getting to know ourselves a little better also means learning to recognise <strong>the <em data-start=\"575\" data-end=\"583\">imagos<\/em> through which we see the world.<\/strong><\/span><\/p><p data-start=\"617\" data-end=\"717\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;
